About the Company

Varna Energy Solutions was founded in late 2007.  Originally, our goal was to produce an objective online video documentary series targeted at homeowners looking for information on the best methods for reducing their energy usage.  However, it soon became clear that a number of the most practical steps for homeowners to take required equipment which was too expensive to justify purchasing for a single use, and nobody out there was renting it.  It also became clear that there were far too few qualified and unbiased energy auditors and building contractors out there who offered these sorts of services to homeowners.  This led us to change our business model and enter the industry as residential building contractors and auditors.

What makes us unique is that we possess a much more well-rounded knowledge of all the technologies and building practices available to homeowners.  We understand the need for improvements to both the building envelope as well as the mechanical solutions.  Few auditors fully understand both.  All our auditors have strong engineering backgrounds, and typically are graduates of top tier schools.  This might seem like overkill, but with all the emerging technologies out there, this level of education and analytical ability is necessary to truly give homeowners the best recommendations for their home.  Nobody else offers this in Westchester.

We prefer clients who have a genuine interest in helping to save the environment, but we also cater solutions to those just looking to save some money.  We do not do new home construction though, since no matter how "green" you are in the building process, nothing is "greener" than a plot of wild land.

Quick Word from the Founder

Thank you for taking the time to read about my company!  This has been quite the journey for me, and I've learned an unbelievable amount along the way.

I spent many of my formative years growing up right here in Somers,NY.  After high school, I attended Cornell University where I studied mechanical and aerospace engineering.   In 2003, I went on to design submarines for the US Navy.  In 2004, I returned to Cornell to pursue my master’s degree, which I received in 2005.  For the following two years, I worked as a Simulation designer for Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) in Washington D.C.

It was during this last job and the early stages of the economic crisis of 2007 that I began to learn that the arguments behind global climate change were too strong to ignore, and that the problem needed the help of every able-minded man, woman, and child in order to be solved.  I always heard the rhetoric about how there are "natural cycles" whenever there was a "debate" about the subject. I'd almost been brainwashed into believing it myself when I started to work on weather modeling for a naval simulation, which piqued my interests enough to start doing some extra reading on the side.  I quickly learned that while, yes, there are natural cycles (primarily caused by our changing orbit and solar cycles), what we have  done as a species since the industrial revolution has caused changes far greater than we have seen in at least the last 700,000 years.  I won't waste my time preaching to the choir, as I'm sure that if you've made it this far into our site, you probably know a lot of this already.  I'll just point out the following chart, which shows carbon dioxide concentrations trapped in Antarctic ice core samples dating back over the last several hundred thousand years.  If you click on the graph, it will take you to the source site (http://www.epa.gov/climatechange/science/index.html).

I quickly realized that my skills in modeling and simulation were easily transferable to helping struggling homeowners figure out why their energy bills are so high and how best to cut them down.  My background in mechanical engineering further allowed me to understand the principles behind the most current technologies, and so I also got into geothermal heat pump design and installation.  In 2007, I left my job in DC, started Varna Energy Solutions, and returned home to Westchester County to help homeowners go green.

Since arriving back in NY, I've dedicated myself to the pursuit of any knowledge that can help my clients save money and reduce their energy usage.
